Cosmetology School Supplies: What Will You Need for Your First Day of Class?

Cosmetology school tuition covers the cost of classes, labs, and sometimes textbooks that will be used throughout the time students spend in class. It rarely covers costs associated with supplies that will only be used by the student. When tuition does cover the cost of supplies, it may not cover every item that will be necessary to complete the course successfully, so always check with your school before purchasing supplies.

In general, students attending cosmetology school spend their first semester working on the fundamentals of cosmetology and therefore use fewer supplies. But once the basics are covered, it will be time to ramp up the training and get hands-on with the curriculum.

Students are also responsible for any supplies they purchase, so it is extremely important to keep up with any kit purchases. (They can be stolen, as one student at Paul Mitchell’s cosmetology school recently realized.

How much will cosmetology school supplies cost?

Depending on where a student goes to purchase products, supplies for cosmetology school can cost between $1500 and $2000, including text books. Many retailers offer significant student discounts and many cosmetology schools have  worked out relationships with suppliers so that students pay much less than the average retail price on supplies.

Cosmetology schools typically provide standard cosmetology supplies, such as salon equipment. But students are often left up to their own resources when it comes to combs, scissors, hair dyes, and the like. Luckily, cosmetology student kits are sold in prepackaged, reasonably-priced bundles.
