How to Find Help Paying for Cosmetology School

Making a decision to go to cosmetology school is an easy for individuals who enjoy helping others feel better, but some may find that affording this type of program is a bit more difficult. It’s not that cosmetology school is expensive – it is certainly more affordable than a college degree program. However, tuition costs, books, and equipment can add up to more than $10,000 in major metropolitan areas. So finding financial aid for a cosmetology program may be necessary for some students.

One of the obvious ways to get help paying for cosmetology school is through the cosmetology school. Like many colleges and trade schools, most cosmetology schools have forged relationships with financing companies and other entities that are interested in the school’s success as a business. This means that you may be able to find a loan or grant through the financial aid office at the school.

The School Grants Blog, a website dedicated to helping students find financial aid also suggests that students interested in cosmetology school start their search by looking “at the obvious”:

“If you attend an accredited cosmetology school, or you’re planning to attend an accredited school, you want to start by going to the financial office of that school. The financial aid officers can direct you not only to grants that you might be eligible for but also to student loans, federal aid, and other scholarships that can benefit you.

You’ll likely want to start applying for aid that is free. That is, most grants and scholarships do not need to be repaid like a student loan, so you want to tap into the stream of free money before you consider taking out a loan. The financial aid officers at your cosmetology school can help you identify cosmetology school grants that might be specific to your particular niche, your specific financial need, or that specifically benefit students who live or work in a particular area.” (Read more here.)

Another option for student hopefuls is a grant program that is tailored specifically for cosmetology school tuition and costs.  These are in limited supply, but excellent students can qualify for grants from a variety of sources:

“If you’re interested in cosmetology as a competitive career, you might want to consider applying for the American Cosmetology Education Grant funded by the American Association of Cosmetology Schools and their corporate sponsors. You locate a school you wish to attend and apply through them. Depending on your interview and application process, along with program costs and your financial situation, you may or may not be eligible for grant money. Also, many cosmetology programs are booked, meaning you may have to wait a while particularly if you want grant subsidies.

The Model College of Hair Design in Minnesota offers students a high-quality cosmetology program that includes on-campus residence. Students may apply online for housing and tuition grants that are regularly awarded.” – (Find more Cosmetology School Grants at CollegeScholarships.org)

Traditional avenues for funding your college education may also be helpful when trying to finance your cosmetology school tuition. Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is useful for all types of educational institutions. A student loan can also help pay for tuition to the college of your choice. Just remember that after graduation, all of the money borrowed for cosmetology school will become due, usually in the form of monthly payments to the finance company and with interest added.
