Indiana Bill Withdrawn, Cosmetology Schools Relax

Soon after our report on Wednesday that a bill to deregulate the industry could significantly harm cosmetology schools, the bill was withdrawn from the House.

House Bill 1006 was withdrawn thanks to the rising protest from related industries, proving again that democracy wins in this situation.

Earlier this month, New Hampshire legislators faced a similar bill that failed before it ever left the state’s congress. That bill was met with severe disagreement from cosmetology schools, professionals in the industry, and representatives of other industries that were on the chopping block. Indiana’s industry representatives showed up in force to oppose HB 1006 and successfully persuaded law makers to withdraw the bill, at least for now.

David Wolkins (R) of Winona Lake was tasked with handling the measure said that the people who showed up at the session were impressive and persuasive in their arguments. As a result, Wolkins withdrew the bill and the House didn’t vote on it.

This latest wave of deregulation effecting cosmetology schools and other industries such as dieticians in Indiana and landscaping companies in New Hampshire was an attempt by lawmakers to trim the state budget. Fewer regulations in these industries would equal fewer supervisory agencies. In his own words, Wolkin said on his blog that the whole goal of the house bill was so that the state could be less involved.

The American Association of Cosmetology Schools was among several heavy-hitting groups that showed up to protest the bill and testify to the house that it was ultimately a harmful measure for all people involved. While the industries win (so far) in New Hampshire and Indiana, we can expect to see these deregulation actions from states throughout the union. Cosmetology schools in the U.S. are keeping a close eye on this wave of budget cuts.
