Good News for Cosmetology School Graduates in 2012

According to one of the more respected sources on career outlooks in the United States, hairdressers, barbers, and general cosmetologists can look forward to great business and a profitable future this year and throughout the decade.

The U.S. News and World Report regularly publishes a list of “Bests” in any given category and this year, cosmetology school graduates working in the hair arena made it among the top performing jobs on the “Best Jobs 2012” list.

The station of cosmetology graduates on their list isn’t without precedence, however.  The U.S. Department of Labor and Statistics predicted in 2010 that the job field would grow much faster than other industries over the next decade, predicting that nearly 100,000 positions will be filled between 2010 and 2020. That’s a job growth rate of nearly 16%.

And while cosmetology school graduates will need to put in some time “paying their dues” as a salon worker, there is more promise of the ultimate experience for most cosmetologists: opening their own salon. The average income for in-salon jobs right now is about $22,000 annually, but the most experienced hair dressers are easily bringing in closer to twice that amount each year.

Attending the right cosmetology school is hugely important in the equation according to industry experts. The more a cosmetology school teaches their students and the better that student does in their first few years out of the gate, the better the income potential.

It takes time to build a loyal customer base and all of the basic skills training in the world can’t make a cosmetologist great at customer service – the one and only way to maximize income potential. As important as it is to make the customer happy with their appearance, it is just as important to make them happy about the time spent in the chair.
