Will Cosmetology School Be a Thing of the Past in NH?

In New Hampshire, cosmetology school and subsequent licensing is still a requirement if one intends to work with the public, earning a living.

But a new move to deregulate various industries in the state in order to stimulate job growth may make it possible to do it without a formal education or certification.

Many in the state are waiting with bated breath to see what will come of the movement that seeks to deregulate everything from barbering to massage therapists. As one might expect, there is some controversy around this idea, which will be back up for discussion in the next few months.

The online news publication Boston reported on this story near the end of December and told the story of Derrick Freeman, a 22-year old New Hampshire resident who feels that his work should be able to speak for itself. Likewise, Pam New, a resident who attended cosmetology school and is licensed in the state, feels that deregulation is simply unsafe to the general population. New pointed out that hairdressers use dangerous chemicals that can severely burn the skin and cause permanent damage to tissue. “Literally, we could make bombs with these chemicals,” she told Boston.

Cosmetology school graduates make up the largest group of professionals that the state bill would attempt to deregulate. Right now, New Hampshire licensing requires 1,500 hours in cosmetology school to even apply for licensing. It also costs about $12,000 to complete such training at a cosmetology school – the mitigating factor in boosting the employment rates in this industry for New Hampshire.

In a snapshot perception of the bill, supporters and the opposition are at great odds over the feasibility of deregulation. Supporters say current regulatory laws prevent competition and job opportunities. Opposing views argue that the regulations are there to protect the consumer.
